Michael Cowan Triangle Film Salon Lecture

March 27, 2018 @ 5:30 am - 7:00 pm

We’re inviting you to the next Triangle Film Salon on March 27 at 5:30pm in Toy Lounge.

Our invited speaker will be Michael Cowan, Head of Film Studies at the University of St. Andrews, with the talk “Interactive Media and Imperial Subjects: Excavating the Cinematic Shooting Gallery.”
The talk is a media archeology of a forgotten technology, namely the cinematic shooting gallery, and will situate these galleries in a variety of contexts, including colonialism and tourist safaris.

Michael Cowan’s work is highly interdisciplinary and focuses on European modernity, in particular the role of images within longer histories of knowledge, selves and governmentality. His monographs include Walter Ruttmann and the Cinema of Multiplicity: Avant-Garde—Advertising—Modernity (Amsterdam UP, 2014), Technology’s Pulse: Essays on Rhythm in German Modernism (London: IGRS Books, 2012), and Cult of the Will: Nervousness and German Modernity (Penn State UP, 2008/2012).
